Writings on the Wall

Hey, folks, it's time for another roundup of the sites I've been exploring this week.

Eat Real Festival Oakland

This is going to be huge! Eat Real is like the Maker Faire just for food people. There are exhibits on everything from street food to butchery to urban homesteading. We're hoping to make it Sunday at least, but if we can't, we're going to be SO jealous.

Bento Lunch for Back to School

Tiffany and I aren't in school anymore, but we have been enjoying making bento box lunches (we'll post some of our favorites soon) and Just Bento has been an indispensable guide. So far we've tried some traditional standards like rolled omelets and rice balls, but we've also strayed into the more exotic stuff. Terriyaki spam-pineapple-pickled ginger sushi anyone?

We're at it again - SF Hunger Challenge (Season Two!)

Last year we found out just how hard it really is to live on what many American's have as a weekly food budget. After our experience with the Hunger Challenge, we decided to try our hand at living on the $3 per day, per person supplement for the forty days of Lent. So, this year we're excited to be supporting our friends over at the SF Food Bank by participating in their 2010 Hunger Challenge.  We will be eating on a food stamp budget - that's just $4 a day (yay for the stimulus) - for an entire week!
Please consider standing with us to shed light on the problem of hunger in our communities by taking the challenge yourself.  You can do it for one day, two days, or go the distance and do it for an entire week.  You can follow us here and on twitter (@guerrillatogo) for menu ideas, recipes inspiration and a lot of delicious looking food pictures from our kitchen!

Click here to learn more and sign up for the Challenge. Let us know if you and or your blog are participating in the contest and we'll make sure to include your ideas, hints and tips along the way!

Writings on the Wall

While we weren't able to make any of  the seminars or events, we were excited to hear about the annual festival of food and wine. But there's always next year and we were able to experience the opening night festivities through fellow food blogger (and event co-host) Marcia Gagliardi's stories over at tablehopper.com. If you aren't already, you should subscribe to her weekly newsletter to keep up on the ever morphing wine and dine situations in SF.

How do you say Taco in Korean?
Well...we're not sure, but we know how to say "please" and "thank you" and that keeps us pretty much up to speed once we discovered TaKorea and the beauty that is a street style taco topped with yes - kimchi. You'll need to play the hunt and wait game a bit (follow them on Twitter to discover where they are and when) but rumor has it that the truck will be moving out of SOMA to other locations soon! May I suggest somewhere near where we have lunch?
A Ramadan round up, news from home and re-discovering an old favorite after the jump!

Shove it in Your Face!

Week of August 9th - 14th

Lately we've been taking a full week to deep dive into a different style of cooking and this week we're doing Indian food. Indian food has always been a little tricky for us since Tiffany is allergic to curry leaves, however when you're cooking at home you are able to avoid those kind of things (yet another advantage to home cooking!) We decided to choose recipes from Cooking with my Indian Mother-in-law by Simon Daley and Roshan Hirani. We've chosen a couple of difficult recipes (Masal stuffed eggplant) and some really out there recipes (bitter gourd curry) so we'll have to cross our fingers and hope for the best!
Menu and details after the jump...
